Zenyatta foals big bay Bernardini colt

A HOY plus a HOY equals bundle of horsey joy! Zenyatta’s much-anticipated foal arrived just after 10:10 p.m. ET on March 8.

The Horse of the Year (HOY) winner Zenyatta (Street Cry x Vertigineux by Kris S.), gave birth to a bay colt, sired by HOY and 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini. The lanky male Thoroughbred, weighing 130 pounds upon arrival, has a white star on his forehead and appears to have a bit of white on his feet. His coat is dark bay, largely resembling his famous dam.

“All went well with the foaling, I must say …. I did it like a champ! [sic],” wrote breeding manager Dottie Ingordo-Shirreffs (penning a diary post for Zenyatta on the official “Zenyatta: Queen of Racing” blog site). “My foal is absolutely precious.

“We are still getting acclimated to this entire new experience. I’m doing great. My baby is doing great.”

Owners Jerry and Ann Moss (of A & M Records) flew in from Southern California earlier in the week to be at Kentucky’s Lane’s End Farm for Zenyatta’s foaling.
