Military museum taking over Stuart air show

STUART — The Road to Victory Military Museum is assuming command of the annual airshow at Witham Field.

The museum has taken over as lead sponsor of the popular two-day event from the Visiting Nurse Association of Florida, which presented the airshow for the past 10 years.

The airshow will go on as planned on Nov. 13 and 14, featuring military aircraft and spectacular mid-air demonstrations, Michael Roberts, the museum president, said Monday.

“It’s a perfect fit for the museum,” Roberts said. “There are several other air shows in the country that are being run by military museums.”

VNA Chief Executive Officer Don Crow has made the transition easy by providing expertise, documents and $40,000 in proceeds from the 2009 show that were earmarked for the 2010 show, Roberts said.

“Their mission and service to veterans is a perfect match for the air show,” Crow said. “We are very excited about their involvement and handing the torch over.”

The VNA “has achieved its goal of making the Air Show a self-sustaining entity,” according to a news release on the association’s website. “Over the last 10 years, the show has grown from 12,000 in attendance to over 60,000 and the largest event on the Treasure Coast.”

The VNA will continue to be among the show’s sponsors, the news release states.

“As a result of their hard work and dedication, the Stuart Air Show has been recognized as one of the best shows in the country,” Airport Director Mike Moon said. “We are extremely grateful for their support, partnership and creativity and now, for the opportunity to ‘pass the baton’ to another worthy nonprofit organization.”

The main difference in this year’s show will be the addition of a re-enactment of a World War II battle before the airshow. It will feature people dressed as U.S. and German soldiers, Roberts said.

“The air portion of the show is pretty locked in, the planes that are coming,” Roberts said. “But we want to do some stuff on the ground to get people to come out early and see weapons demonstrations. I’m working with the U.S. Army on bringing in some ground assets also.

“The World War II re-enactment is a big thing. We have an area where we’re planning on doing a battle that people can watch from the bleachers. You’ll see the armor coming in and firing the main guns. We have explosions going off. The battles that we do, I think they’re pretty impressive.”

The airshow brings visitors to Stuart from throughout the Treasure Coast as well as other parts of Florida, Roberts said.

This year the Stuart Air Show is being done in conjunction with the 8th Air Force Veterans Association’s reunion for World War II fliers, Roberts said.

“I think that it’s great to have these guys who flew in World War II come into Stuart,” Roberts said. “I knew they wanted to do a reunion. We want to have guys like that at the show. We said, ‘Hey, you have (the reunion) on the weekend we’re doing the air show, you’ll be invited to the show.’ They’re going to be invited guests.”

The museum will become the beneficiary of the money left over from the 2010 show that is not set aside for the 2011 show, Roberts said. The museum anticipates running the airshow for the foreseeable future.

“There are a lot of people out there that love air shows,” Roberts said. “Unfortunately, there are more and more air shows that are being canceled because of cost. I think it’s very important that we keep that stuff alive, that people see manned military aircraft and what our military does.”
