Pirates could be the ticket to family fun in Stuart this weekend.

Looking for fun this weekend in Stuart.
Pirate Festival to turn Downtown Stuart into family-friendly party
By Cathy Reeder
Historic Downtown Stuart will be awash in pirates this weekend, but they be friendly ones, ready to party with landlubbers after an apparently good season of plundering our famed Treasure Coast.

The 4th Annual Treasure Coast Pirate Fest runs Sept. 9 through Sept. 11, filling downtown with family-friendly activities: costume contests, rides, games, arts and crafts and food vendors, a family treasure hunt, live mermaids, pirate bands (musical and roving), and Blackbeard’s pirate ship at City Hall dock. The Pirate’s Ball, 7 to 11 p.m. Sept. 9, will finish off the first day of events.

New this year is a pirate encampment behind the Stuart Feed Store, where gnarly looking historians provide an authentic look at pirate life. They’ll sport real firing cannon and black powder weapons. This is the actual site where infamous Treasure Coast pirate Don Pedro Gilbert (of Gilbert’s Bar fame) and his crew once came ashore and created havoc in the early 1800s.

New for adults is the Tortuga Pub Crawl, with 11 participating restaurants and vendors.
